Excellent Tool October 31, 2007 BargainHunter 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've owned my AutoTap for a little over two years and love it! I have the USB version and use it with a Windows XP/SP2 Home Edition laptop. You can't beat the data provided, when compared with hand-held units. It allows you to set up the display as raw data, graphs, or gages. You can also record and play back, which is useful for test driving. It will tell you system monitoring status for EPA readiness. I have a cheaper OBD2 hand-held unit and the AutoTap will occasionally pick up DTCs that the little hand-held unit won't. I've also exported data as CSV and imported it into a spreadsheet to create graphs from there. Be aware that the "vanilla" AutoTap comes with access to generic parameters, but manufacturer specific sensor information costs extra (as an add-on). When I bought my AutoTap, I also bought their Sensor Guide and was equally pleased. Note: I've seen people complain that OBD2 scanners didn't "fix" their problem. An OBD2 scan tool will not "fix" a problem--its purpose is to gather information. Another false assumption is that a displayed trouble code (DTC) indicates that a sensor is bad. This is not necessarily the case. For example: I had a P0507, "Idle air control - RPM higher than expected" and the problem had nothing to the with the IAC--it was the result of a vacuum leak. The point I'm trying to make is: Please understand that owning a OBD2 reader is invaluable in troubleshooting a "check engine" light, but you are most likely still going to need to do some homework to nail down the exact cause. If you are a do-it-yourself guy, like I am, and are serious about troubleshooting DTCs I would recommend buying a service manual for your vehicle that contains a troubleshooting flowchart for each code. Purchasing the factory service manuals for my vehicle and using them in conjunction with this tool has proved invaluable to me. Shop around for the best price on this product. Hope that helps!
