5 out of 5 stars AutoXray 700 CodeScout   January 1, 2009
Don Hall
As written in prior reviews, this code scanner is simple to use, and provides a professional analysis of trouble codes. What is not included in prior reviews is the need for a shop manual for your specific vehicle in combination with this scanner. The scanner will provide the trouble codes, but you will need a manual to locate the faulty units (sensors, etc.), and the how-to instructions for replacing faulty units. Buy this scanner, add a factory shop manual, and you will save on repair bills. Depending on your mechanical skills, a factory manual is recommended ($100 +/-), but for those with limited mechanical skills, a Chilton or Haynes manual (available at most parts stores - $15 +/-) will suffice.

this tool is good for the man with a garage that can't afford to take his wife;s car to a dealer when the check engine light comes on. Its so easy to use and it tells you the code and what it is. So don't spend thousands on dealers when you could do it yourself by owning the scan tool. best thing that I bought for my garage.

3 out of 5 stars Good for reading generic codes only   June 14, 2008

Another reviewer said the dealer found 8 DTC codes but the CodeScout only showed 2. The MFR's website description (http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=92) says the CodeScout (only) reads and displays generic DTCs (not manufacturer specific DTC's). It will however erase both generic and manufacturer specific DTC's. So if you want to read custom DTC's for you make/model, you'll need the AutoXray 1500 instead of the 700 (and pay 2x the price).

This is a very useful tool that I think anybody could use.My sons service engine soon light was on and I knew what the problem was. we had unhooked the oxygen senser to fix a doughnut gasket leak and while we had the exhaust apart my son started the car to hear what it sounded like.well because we turned on the ignition with sensor unhooked ,, when we put it back together the service engine light stayed on. All I did was plugged in the autoXray 700. I just pushed the erase button and it turned out the light and it didn't come back on.it did read the correct code when it first diagnosed the problem. Very, very easy to use.

Thought I'd try the cheap model as I just needed to read a code and then reset the code. Worked fine on our Explorer and F150. Glad I bought it and not the more expensive models.
