It is designed to be used by almost anyone, from a DIYer to the ASE master technician. The 3100 CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool is designed to retrieve diagnostic codes in all OBD II (1996 and newer) vehicles. The tool features a unique patented all-in-one screen display and LED display for quick OBD I/M check, so you'll know if you're ready to pass an emissions test. The 3100 was built to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. This device also stores diagnostic codes in its memory for off-car review and analysis. The 3100 is also equipped with the ability to connect to your PC. With the included cables and software you can connect the tool to your computer to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports--plus you can even update the 3100 via the Internet.
The 3100 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). Well to start, this unit seemed well built. Has a little weight to it so I think its built good. I only used it once because it has one poor design issue. "IT DONT LIGHT UP"..no lighted led screen monitor? Like doin a etch a scetch in the old days. lol...All fairness they left it out so you would buy the higher models I guess. Strange part is most of the cheap readers this company makes seem to have lighted displays.
I live in an area were its dark at 5pm in the colder part of the yr. I need light. If you dont have sight issues or if you dont care if you have to hold a flash light while looking at codes then go for it...I returned it and bought the 1403. It does more anyway. If you do get the upper models be prepared to get a RS232 to USB adapter plug for them. Not sure why these are not updated to USB? Hope this helps...most people dont seem to care about the light but it makes such a big difference.

Doesn't work with my 2001 Nissan Altima - it is unable to recognize the computer. Other ODB2 readers work fine on the same vehicle. Buy a different product which isn't so finicky.

This is a must have, scanner does the job, tells you exactly what the malfunction is. Easy to use and the price is great. I recommend this product. I'm completely satisfied and have nothing negative to say for the moment. If you're on a budget and need a good scanner? Look no further and buy this one.

The device is totally worthless. Unless your trying to get out of carbon emissions it is total junk.
You actually get advertising as your trying to do an analysis of your car. It ask you on several
screens do you want to buy this for $15. Do you want to buy this for $10. Yet I was like I paid
$80 for what? I get no diagnostics other then it can read my ID of my car so what theirs a damn
plate next to my windshield I don't need this. So I used the software went to website it was like a form that you can submit that does nothing other then if you plug in the USB cable to device upload it. You don't get anything other then more advertising. This whole device is worthless. I test my mother's SUV . I tried testing my BLAZER. I tried my sisters DODGE. No information. I was like at least tell me what's OK. No, it suppose to give me back information well to get that you says you need to pay $15 to view this in the Digital Display.

This check engine light reader is one of the nicest home mechanic readers I have ever used. I used to be a service manager at a Ford dealership and miss the ability to use the actual computers that the mechanics use, but am very satisfied with this replacement. Most auto parts stores will scan your vehicle for you and some will clear the light for you and some wont. You don't have to worry about that with this scanner.
I believe this is the best scanner for the money. The higher dollar scanners that are offered have features that the average person will never use. If you are that caliber of a mechanic you are probably not looking at this unit anyway. It is nice to have a reader that gives you the problem in english right then and not have to take a number to the computer or other book and look up whats wrong. Of course the reader does not always diagnose the problem but atleast it gives you a starting point. If you want to use the advertised additional online help that is advertised with this be prepared to pay for a membership (nothing in life is free).
